Unterwestegg Chapel Maria Hilf

The Unterwestegg chapel Maria Hilf is located in the district of Unterwestegg / Riezlern.

This chapel was built in the year 1796 in place of a wayside shrine by seven neighboring farmers. They committed to preserving the little church for their future homeowners as well. This still applies today. Pastor Julius Längle from Riezlern succeeded in 1907, through the mediation of the Austrian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand, in acquiring a late Gothic winged altar from the Pustertal in South Tyrol. Whether it can be attributed to the famous Pacherschule or the influence of this artist family remains uncertain.

In the center of the altar, the Madonna is depicted, with Saints Florian and George alongside her. The inner sides of the altar wings show images of the saints Martin and Wendelin, revered by the farmers. The Neo-Gothic chapel bears at its front the cross with the instruments of the Passion (circa 1680). The stations of the cross in half-reliefs were created by Otto Birkenbach.
