Lourdes Chapel

The chapel is located directly behind the parish church in Mittelberg.

In the year 1897, the chapel was built as a foundation of the master builder Friedrich Mathies (1838-1900). He was a trained locksmith, spent time in Switzerland and Lower Austria, and achieved significant professional success. He constructed three rental apartment buildings in Vienna in response to the housing shortage. His significant initiative led to the creation of the well-known cottage complex, consisting of three villas. His grave is located in Kasten near Vienna.

In his birthplace Mittelberg, he erected a beautiful monument to his connection to his homeland. The main portal of the parish church, bricked up since 1693, was reopened after the completion of the chapel because an effective protection against the Heuberg avalanche was now in place. The sharply sloping wall of the chapel on the mountain side is intended to deflect the approaching snow masses from the Heuberg.
