The Heuberg rises directly above the centre of Hirschegg. Where today a chairlift takes you comfortably to the top, a mysterious mountain people, as old as the mountains themselves, are said to have lived in the past: the Bergmännle.

HIDDEN IN THE CAVES OF THE HEUBERG A HIDDEN PEOPLE

The Bergmännle lived hidden away in the caves of the Heuberg. They fed on whatever nature provided them with. They avoided daylight, because they felt comfortable in the darkness. The people of the valley only saw them on one day of the year.

EXUBERANT ATMOSPHERE CARNIVAL AT THE DANCE HOUSE

Whenever carnival was celebrated in the dance hall, the Bergmännle appeared. They cheerfully mingled with the revellers, were the best dancers of all and created a lively atmosphere. But as soon as the sun went down on Fasnacht day, the whole crowd – still dancing and accompanied by drums – wandered back to the Heuberg. There they disappeared again for a whole year.

Perhaps you will discover clues TRACES IN THE DAWN

Sometimes, it is said, the Bergmännle left their footprints in the damp grass when they returned to their caves before dawn. So if you are out and about on the Heuberg today, keep your eyes peeled – you might spot a trace of this whimsical folk.

But please stay on the paths – the Bergmännle love their undisturbed peace and quiet.
