Leidtobel Chapel Maria Help

The Leidtobel chapel is located on the footpath (Leidtobel-Breitachweg) from Hirschegg to Riezlern.

As early as 1730, a Madonna chapel was built in Leidtobel (= desolate gorge). It was located directly next to the old main road to Mittelberg-Riezlern. Church caretaker Leo Mathis and Pastor Anton Schäfer initiated the construction of the current chapel in 1892.

The property was provided free of charge by Daniel Schuster, and the stone material was also supplied free of charge by the Hirschegg family. The construction costs were covered by voluntary donations. The artist Josef Reich from Bizau created the figure "Mary with Child" in 1919, an artwork from Allgäu around 1510. It was consecrated in 1919 by Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Waitz. The crown of this Gothic sculpture was carved by Ferdinand Keßler from Riezlern.

The chapel itself was not consecrated until 1919, and the mass license was granted. In 1935, it was expanded with an octagonal round building on the northern side. The Madonna also received great veneration in the new sanctuary, especially during the years of the two world wars.
